Novant is a Melbourne-based design and fabrication studio specialising in bespoke staircases, doors and flooring. We work with architects, interior designers and homeowners who want something made properly.
The studio
Novant was founded on a single conviction: that the most important moments in a home deserve the same level of care as the architecture around them. A staircase is not a product. A door is not a fitting. Each is a made object that will outlast every other decision in the room.
We operate from our Brighton workshop, where a small team of craftspeople works across timber joinery, steel fabrication, and stone setting. Every commission is built from scratch to a signed-off workshop drawing. Nothing leaves the workshop until it is right.
The process
Drawing to installation, every step
Every Novant commission follows the same four steps. We draw it. We model it. We make it. We install it. Each step requires your sign-off before the next begins, so there are no surprises on site and no value-engineering decisions made without you.
The result is a piece that fits the space exactly as drawn, delivered on a schedule that respects your broader program.
How we work
From brief to installed
Drawing
We start with your brief and produce detailed workshop drawings for review. Scale, material, profile and fixing are all resolved on paper before any fabrication begins.
3D modelling
Complex pieces are modelled in 3D so you can review the geometry, sight lines and material relationships before sign-off. Changes cost nothing at this stage.
Fabrication
Our craftspeople build each piece in the workshop, using traditional joinery techniques alongside CNC precision where it adds value. Finishes are applied and inspected before dispatch.
Installation
Our own installers deliver and fit every piece. We coordinate with your site supervisor and other trades to hit the program without disrupting the build.
Materials
We work in three primary material families: timber, stone, and steel. Within each, we source selectively. Timbers are chosen for grain consistency and stability. Stone is inspected in slab form before selection. Steel is fabricated to tight tolerances and finished to your specification, from raw to blackened to powder-coated.
We also work with hybrid palettes: a staircase might combine a blackened steel structure with a white oak tread and a polished concrete landing. These decisions happen in the drawing phase, not on site.
Made once, made properly.
Our values
We believe in making things that last. Not trend-driven pieces that date, but objects with quiet confidence in their material and their making. Novant work should look better in ten years than it does on the day it is installed.
We work with a limited number of commissions at any one time so every project receives the attention it deserves. If we are fully booked, we will tell you rather than let quality slip.
